I Brush My Teeth – Why Should I go to the Dentist?

While dental self-care is important, there’s only so much you can do on your own. A dentist visit every six months is still required for overall good oral health.

Even the most dedicated brushing and flossing still can’t catch all the plaque that builds up naturally throughout the day. If plaque isn’t removed promptly, it will develop into tartar, which can irritate the gum tissue and damage teeth. A professional cleaning and examination is needed to keep teeth at their best.

In addition to cleanings, dentists also:

  • Examine the gums and look for signs of gum disease
  • Check for loose teeth, broken teeth, or damaged fillings
  • Evaluate soft tissues – your tongue, palate, and gums
  • Take X-rays
  • Repair damage and fill cavities

And believe it or not, teeth are only one aspect of a visit to the dentist. In today’s dental visit, doctors and hygienists usually:

  • evaluate gum health
  • perform a head and neck exam
  • check for signs of oral cancer, diabetes, or vitamin deficiencies
  • assess your bite
  • check your salivary glands
  • look for symptoms of TMJ (Temporomandibular joint) disorder

By working together, you and your dentist will make a great team – and your mouth will thank you!
