Healthy Eating for Healthy Teeth
We’ve all heard that diet – especially sugary snacks – can have an impact on dental health. But do you know why?
When bacteria, found in plaque, interact with sugars, they produce acid as a byproduct. This acid attacks the teeth, breaking down the outer layer of enamel. Regular exposure to this acid will eventually result in tooth decay.
This doesn’t mean that you can’t indulge in a sweet treat every now and then. Drinking a glass of water or rinsing your mouth afterward can mitigate most of the damage until you have the chance to brush again.
Smart Snacks & Healthy Foods:
- Cheese
- Chicken and other meats
- Nuts
- Crunchy fruits, like apples or pears
- Fresh vegetables
- Milk and other dairy products
Prevent tooth decay and acid break-down:
- Brush thoroughly twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Use an approved mouth wash after brushing
- Floss daily under gums and between teeth to remove plaque
- Schedule a regular dental visit every 6 months
- Drink lots of water (fluoridated is best!)
- Choose low-sugar foods and snacks
